South London African women’s organisation (SLAWO)
works closely with African and other ethnic minority women and their children who have been affected by domestic violence. SLAWO works in a holistic and empowering way to meet the needs of different ervice users so that they can live a better life.

SLAWO offers free and safe housing in our shelter, legal advice, culturally appropriate counselling, parenting and life skills training, domestic violence workshops and conferences, community-based outreach support to women in their homes, support groups for survivors of domestic violence and children’s services.

SLAWO offers cultural interpretation training for service providers working with survivors of domestic violence and interpreters can be arranged where needed and our counselling team speaks more than 15 community languages. We have disability access to our premises and meetings are arranged in community buildings that are fully accessible.

 

Mission Statement
To eliminate domestic violence in African and other ethnic minority communities, by increasing awareness about the extent of the problem, making culturally specific issues visible, strengthening community models of prevention and intervention, identifying and expanding resources, informing and promoting research and policy, and deepening understanding of the issues surrounding violence against women.
