What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is essentially a pattern of behaviour and/or any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between adults who are or have been in a relationship together or between family members, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, age, wealth and geography.

It includes a wide range of intimidating and threatening behaviour: physical violence and threats, emotional abuse, forced marriage, honour crime, financial control, female genital mutilation, spiritual abuse, bride-price abuse, sexual assault and migration marriage abuse.

Domestic violence occurs in all settings, regardless of ethnicity, social background, sexuality or financial status and it occurs in heterosexual and same sex relationships to people of all ages. It can be perpetuated by an ex-partner, a partner or a family member.
